Samplers

Fixed Exhibition: “Stitch by stich”.

This collection has (darning pattern) samplers from a variety of regions in the Netherlands. The Frisian samplers for example have details that are unique to that region. The oldest Frisian sampler we have is from 1694. The Victorian samplers and school samplers are also present. The oldest darning pattern sampler in our collection is from 1709. Our museum has darning pattern samplers from the nationally renowned textile craft school in Amsterdam as well as samplers from the later textile schools.

Each sampler tells a tale about the person who made it and the time she lived in. The symbols on the samplers tell us much. A special guided tour about this subject is available as a group activity. For more information check group activities.
